Open source Ruby on Rails applications are rare but with some drilling down, you can uncover some really great ones. ChiliProject is one of them. It is a web-based project management system that allows your team to control the complete life cycle of a project from start to finish. You can set up and discuss project plans, track issues, report work progress and share files.

Here are some of the great features you’ll find in ChiliProject:

Ability to set up a roadmap for your project with related tasks and deadlines.

Map your roadmap in a Grantt chart.

Report and track issues (includes automated email notification and activity feeds).

Collaborate on content using its wiki.

Integration with code repositories like Subversion or Git.

Share and update documents and files.

Flotr2 is a library for drawing HTML5 charts and graphs. It can generate line graphs, bar charts, pie charts and bubble charts. These graphs and charts are generated using HTML5′s canvas and work across several desktop and mobile browsers.

Flotr2 is a fork of the Flotr project without the Prototype library dependency and includes some extra enhancements. It doesn’t rely on any external library and its built-in framework has a great API that you can leverage to build new graph types. Once you provide the data points, the application will automatically calibrate the scale of your axes. Graphs can be zoomed and downloaded as PNG or JPG images.

Also commonly referred to as tooltips, these in-line boxes provide a great way to return relevant information all the while keeping your visitors on the same page. They can be really handy when displaying people’s bio information, book author and pricing details, or loading other contextual information on-the-fly.

Hovercard uses minimum CSS and can support any HTML content – you can mix text with images and can style them accordingly. The most recent version has built-in Twitter and Facebook hovercards functionality whereby which recent Tweets or Facebook account details for a person or group are fetched and rendered in the hovercard automatically.

Joomla!, one of the most popular PHP-based open source content management system (CMS) went through a major upgrade with their version 2.5 release. Along with the new features such as advanced search and automatic notification of Joomla core and extension updates, the Joomla! CMS now also supports MS SQL server as database. Previous versions of Joomla were compatible exclusively with MySQL databases.

Joomla!’s search engine feature now handles better natural language search and auto-completion. The new automatic update mimics WordPress built-in notification and update system whereby which site administrators are notified of new updates for Joomla! as well as third party extensions they have installed. The updates can be performed right from the administrative control panel.

According to water&stone’s 2011 CMS market share report, Joomla ranks second, just behind WordPress in terms of overall weekly download. The overall adoption rate of Joomla has also increased significantly since August 2011 when the community released version 1.7 that expanded Joomla!’s functionality to handle more than just web content.

By now, you probably understand and value the importance of social media as a catalyst for driving more traffic and engagement to your site. Integrating social media on your site takes only a few minutes — most social networking sites provide snippets of HTML or JavaScript code that you can simply copy and paste to your template file(s). One thing I find frustrating about these sharing buttons is that they all sport a different size and style, so customizing them to match the theme of your site or positioning them properly is such a pain.

Luckily, there’s now a sleek, lightweight, and feature-rich plugin called Sharrre that ends this frustration. Sharrre is a jQuery plugin that allows you to create and personalize uniform sharing widgets for popular social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, LinkedIn and more. All Sharrre’s buttons are similar in size and design style and use API to fetch real-time sharing counts across different social networking sites.

The script comes with different pre-built styles and also includes a total sharing count aggregation feature. Sharrre also includes support for Google Analytics social tracking and works across most popular browsers.

SeeMeLikeMe is a free PHP and JavaScript user voting system inspired by YouTube’s “I like/dislike this” buttons. Once installed and configured, it can be applied to any page on your site to offer two buttons for users to cast their like or dislike votes. The script uses AJAX to provide an on-the-fly vote count update.

Along with the voting buttons, SeeMeLikeMe also comes with “insight” data collection and analytics. The insight data displays referring URLs and will plot a graph that shows traffic over time. It also includes a geographic map that allows you to pinpoint where most traffic originates.

The script is smart enough to limit voting to one vote per visitor based on their IP address. All voting and referral information is stored in a mySQL database. The only limitation is that at this point, there’s no interface to manage voting, but it’s unlikely you’ll need this.

You can find similar rating and voting scripts in our PHP Polls & Voting category.

Earlier this month, Google unveiled a new programming language for the web named “Dart,” aimed at being a replacement for JavaScript. Dart’s purpose is to offer better performance, easier scaling, and more security than Java or JavaScript through a familiar and natural language construct that is easy to learn.

Dart addresses some of the limitations of JavaScript, especially in terms of new static types, better object-oriented support, and a language that is highly optimized for mobile devices.

According to a leaked internal memo, Google programmers designed Dart “to replace JavaScript as the lingua franca of Web development.” The same memo describes how JavaScript has become a bottleneck for evolution and that the best approach was simply to start a new language from scratch.

Currently Dart code can only be executed from a virtual machine or on top of a JavaScript engine by using a compiler to translate Dart code to JavaScript. Google, however, does have plans to have Dart supported natively by Google Chrome and is also working with other browser developers to integrate a built-in Dart engine.

It will be interesting to see the adoption rate of Dart by the development community. As with all other attempts from Google to introduce new standards (like the recent WebP image format), I have to admit that I am very skeptical. What is your take on Dart – is it something you plan on investigating further or using?

TaffyDB is an open-source library that brings database features to your JavaScript applications. It is based on the concept of storing data in objects and then grouping those in an array to provide a client-side collection of data similar to a database table.

This library provides several database inspired functions like CRUD (Create, Read, Update, Delete) operations as well as support for sorting, filtering, and even querying against the client-side collection of data. TaffyDB is also easy to extend with custom functions, allowing you to further manipulate the “records.”

The language construct of TaffyDB is extremely simple to use. For example, to update a “status” column in your database for certain records that match the keyword “foo,” you would use something like:

//Update records “status” column for entries that matches “foo”
db(“foo”).update({status:”Active”});

By pre-fetching a chunk of data (maybe on the fly or through AJAX and JSON), you can easily manipulate those on the client-side without having to create a highly data-intensive application. This is going to save a lot of resources and eliminate delays as opposed to using multiple AJAX calls to manipulate database records.

A couple of months ago we featured LESS, a JavaScript based CSS preprocessor which allows you to write CSS using an extended and shorthand syntax which in turn gets compiled into normal CSS. LESS also introduced the concept of variables, mixins and nested rules that are proven time-savers. Based on a similar idea, Marcos Sandrini, a Brazilian designer has released PCSS, a server-side CSS3 preprocessor aimed at helping developers write CSS3 using less code.

PCSS truly extends the concept of shorthand CSS through several built-in features like constants that allow you to define long CSS definitions with short words or even variables to hold any type of data. You can also use pre-defined constants and create functions or nested classes. There’s even an @font-face shortcut with server-side browser detection for slimmer resulting code. Best of all, PCSS will minify your CSS when returning it to the browser.

To install and use PCSS, you will need a PHP5 enabled server. For more information and usage examples, please visit pcss.wiq.com.br
