Several researches and whitepapers reveal that lack of communication and poor project management often doom projects to failures. As a Web developer or designer, the use of efficient tool to capture, track and monitor the process of your client’s project is extremely vital. While there are several remotely hosted services that offers project management tool, they are for most of the time restricted in terms of features and obviously impossible to modify or customize.
Right now on the market, there are four popular PHP scripts developed for freelancers to manage most aspects of their business – from client, billing, project, helpdesk, file and portfolio management. Here’s a quick review of these scripts that can be purchased at relatively low price and will in the long term reap lots of benefits.
FreelancerKit is a simple to use feature packed project management script tailored for web designer and developers looking to be more productive. It support features like project management, file sharing, tasks list, helpdesk and invoicing. FreelancerKit has one of the best interface compared to other scripts of its kind; an interface that is very intuitive and user friendly. Even if you’re new to the concept of client and project management, the different tips section across the interface will easily guide you. The other major aspect of this script is that it has a lot of collaboration feature – if you have a team of other staff working on this project, each of them can easily collaborate based on the roles you assign to them and update projects and clients.

FreelanceSuite was one of the first script developed and is still one of the most popular today. It addresses a lot of key issues faced by freelancers in managing their projects and clients. It has an efficient communication and collaboration tool that is extremely useful if you work as a team. One feature that I personally like best is its workflow approach – your task, when completed is sent automatically as a ‘submission’ to your client for review. Its invoice system works with PayPal and 2Checkout but its gateway can be plugged into other merchant accounts as well. Invoices can be based on per-project or per-hour billing. Please note that FreelanceSuite is encoded, but has a powerful template system that allows you to modify the look and feel of the site.

FreelancerPanel has most of the features you’d expect from a basic freelance script including invoicing, client & project management and helpdesk. However, one of its unique features is that it comes with a content management and e-commerce system for your freelancing/portfolio site as well. This means you can easily update your content and list your services and products for sale without having to use another script. With all bundle in a single system, FreelancerPanel is one of those scripts that gives you a complete package to managing your freelance business. The only inconvenience is the source code is encrypted but styles can layouts can be modified through a templating system.

ClientAxis claims itself to be a client and project management tool for the design industry, but its feature sets can be used by any freelancers in any industry. With ClientAxis, you can put up a section of your site with information about ongoing project. Your client can then login to monitor progress of their projects, tasks, share files and exchange notes. Similar to the other freelance script, you will be able to create invoices. ClientAxis also has a Web hosting add-on whereby you can display and sell Web hosting services to your clients.
