You would think it'd be very simple, but this type of thing is one of the most difficult to learn and get around. Based on your site, it appears that the easiest way would for you to modify the background image of the main content area to have the grey background on the sides a la
faux columns.
If that doesn't help, try googling or checking some of the links at alistapart, or check out
one true layout.
