I agree with Nico's answer. Use the W3C Validator liberally.
Previous versions of IE did a horrible job of rendering web pages in accordance with web standards, however IE8 does a better job of rendering with standard compliance. (Still not perfect
).
But definitely, if you follow standards with your code, you shouldn't have too many issues or major differences.
