The fact that something is not open source signifies that the creators are less open for improvements by the actuals users. BUT, when someone spend months and months developing a good product, of course they want payoff. So it's kind of a predicament.
Open source - More experts can help develop and improve your product
Not open source - You get your salary for your hard work.
But yes, just because it isn't open source doesn't mean it isn't good. Microsoft on the other hand are just basically "teh suxx0rz". They have the visions but not the skills
