ASP.NET frm Scratch?

Hi guys,

Gonna go buy a book or two and learn ASP.NET!

First, I need to know what version (edition) we're on now? 2.0 or 3.5?

Any other beginning tips you guys have would also go down a treat!

Thanks guys!

Diabolical

Hey there,

We are at 3.5. Best would be to start with that version. Then you would have to chose what language you want to use.

You have C# and VB.Net. C# is considered the faster language for the CLR to interpret, although it should make no difference in theorie. So you are more or less not bound by that. If you consider making huge .Net web applications I would go for C#.

To learn ASP.Net though VB might be easier to learn. There are plenty of converters and tutorials if you would ever like to switch to C#.

I would chose between the two by your current knowledge of programming/scripting. If you are used to VB through MS Office programming (vba), ASP programming I would definately go for VB.Net. If you currently know a language like PhP, java(script), C, C++ I would go for C#.Net.

Hope this helps

Yeroon

Thanks for your reply Yeroon!

Figured it was 3.5.

As for my language.. I was thinking VB.NET... But to be totally honest, I don't have extensive experience with either lol! So with that in mind, VB.NET is the easier, more straight-forward option, especially for smaller projects?

And yeah like I said, my breadth of programming, in any language, stops pretty much at HTML!! Sad to say - but I have made it my priority to learn, as best and as much as I can, ASP.NET within the next 4 months. Is that feasible?

Where to start? I was thinking about ASP.NET 3.5 for Dummies, but one of the Amazon reviewers said it lacked in example code and focussed too much on the "Visual Programming elements"???

Any other suggestions of methods, to learn ASP.NET 3.5?

Much appreciated, thanks!

O'Reilly books are always good for learning programming...language preference is up to you. C# is my language of choice, but just as many people like how VB looks. My suggestion would be to look at the syntax of each, and decide which one looks more fun to program in.
