How can I get the 'sqlncli.msi' installation to run on a Win98 box? When I try and run it I get the following error:

"This installation package cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service. You must install a Windows service pack that contains a newer version of the Windows Installer service."

This system is updated to the latest Win98 Service pack as well as having installed "InstMsiA.exe"

Any ideas? Is there a different installer for Windows 98?

The latest available installer for Win98 is version 2.0 - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

If that does not work, you are out of luck. You are aware that Microsoft support for Win98 ended on July 11, 2006?

The general System Requirements for SQL Server 2005 components are:

Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000 Service Pack 4; Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1; Windows XP Service Pack 2

I could not find any specific list of requirements for the Native Client that says it works on anything that is less than these requirements.

Windows 2000 Service Pack 3; Windows 2000 Service Pack 4; Windows Server 2003; Windows XP; Windows XP Service Pack 1; Windows XP Service Pack 2

How about using MDAC 2.6? That worked with SQL Server 2000 and Win98 Clients...
