I am currently working a template that has flash files. The files that I am editing the .swf files. I Import the file with Flash MX 2004, but it doesn't give me the option to just save it again and overwrite the old file. Is there anyway you can just open the swf files and edit them without starting a new project?
You usually have to edit the original .fla file instead of the .swf file. .swf file are compiled flash files and meant to be run in browser or simply viewed by Flash MX 2004.

You may use these tools.
Decompiler For swf to fla: http://www.sothink.com/product/flashdecompiler/index.htm
Quicker for swf to swf: http://www.sothink.com/product/swfquicker/index.htm I bought decompiler first to decompile some swf files, I found it was easily to use. Then, I've found another tool to edit swf---quicker. You know quicker was more powerful than decompiler, it edit swf directly to creat a new swf. So I recommend you to have a quicker. You will love it.
