Is phpBB the most popular php board and why?

Hi all.
I wanting to add a php board to my site and I've almost decided it will be phpBB....but before I do, I wanted to get your feedback. I decided on phpBB in part because it is so popular and I figured go with the flow...there must be a reason it is so popular....so....

Is phpBB the most popular php message board?

If so, can you tell me why it is more popular than the other boards....I'm especially interested in the admin features...easy to use and customizeable.

Is there a better board out there and if so why is it better?

Thanks to all that reply :-)

Subforums

MadDog,

You guys might want to put a comment at the top of the hotscripts forum homepage telling people to look for subforums....I honestly didn't see them when I scanned the forums to see what forum to post in....and I notice this forum doesn't get much traffic...I'm wondering if people actually see it.

You might want to post that in the Suggestions forum, that way Ryan (the main forum admin) will actually read it and consider it.

Getting on topic, phpBB is probably the most popular free php board. vBulletin is the best though, imo.

Have a read of the article called "Forum Software Roundup" over at sitepoint.com: http://www.sitepoint.com/article/1210

I use both phpBB and also vBulletin.

phpBB is great for no cost and best of all, it really does run out of the box (as they say). you can have your forum up within minutes.

support for this free package through the official and unoffical sites is also quite good.

downside is that is can be fiddly to use and you will need to know a bit about HMTL for coding pages etc.

vBulletin is great. It also costs money but you do get some brilliant support (which after all is one of the reasons why you pay and how that money helps get you support)

also I like the way you can change things through the control panel and if you make a mistake, you can always revert back to the original version.

One of the best which is considered better than both Vbulletin and phpBB is Invision Power Board @ www.InvisionPowor.com. They have a great admin control panel, moderator control panel, read all their feedback at their site. Hope this helps.

IPB is great and so is phpBB. vB is awesome, but in my opinion not worth paying for since IPB and phpBB2 are both out there.

Ok Here are the Pros and cons of ipb and phpBB
-----
phpBB
-Way Better Support
-A simple forum
-A nice and friendly community

-----
IPB
-Have to pay for support
-More features than phpBB
-Easier to skin
-A solid community (Staff isnt friendly)
-They say they are keeping IPB free but I dont think they will.

I used to prefer IPB and now i like phpBB. Its more of a preference.
