Multiple column select box

Hi,

I need to create a multiple select box with 2 columns.
for showing ie:

item1 [var 1]
item2 [var 2]
item3 [var 3]
...

I've tried with an JS algorithm to fill with spaces between columns to align its, but the multiple spaces aren't showing ok, just shows only one space.
the size of the itemN values are variable. and the [var N] values must be at the right of the option.

I saw in other sources around my google searches that isn't possible but the only solution is putting ____ or ···· or some other separator, but my client dont want it.

If someone knows how to do it, or something applicable like it, thanks... :]
