expanding a div to keep image contained

hey guys, i'm getting my way into the world of divs and css having moved on from tables and want to know how one can enlarge a div to contain whats within it.

for example, i use a great little gallery called plogger, and i contain it all within my front div, but when i get a large image come along it throws the style out and its really starting to piss me off!

if i set the height of the div and the width, a large image comes along and it just goes over the div, i dunno where to go from here, i dont want my divs to be full screen, i just want them to end x pixels below the image, if that makes sense

cheers

any pointers would be greatly appreciated
