What's up with XML?

Are people still doing new stuff with XML?

I notice the XML & Python Tutorials & Tips secttion of this site has 7 entries, but the most recent one is over 9 years old.

There seemed to be lots and lots of excitement about it in the late nineties, maybe up until the dot-com crash in 2000. Then xml.com was kind of dead for several years.

I've used and parsed a little XML here and there, but I've always thought it would be a very useful tool if I ever learned to work with it better. I'm also occasionally learning a little Python, so it might be good to learn them both together.

But am I the only one? Is everyone else abandoning XML?

I hate XML . Parsing it is a pain in the A$#. Writing new code for each feed is insane. Also it seems to me that it is a very inefficient way to store / transfer data.

Sounds like you haven't heard of simpleXML. It's never been easier to parse XML.

But yeah, XML is kinda dead now it seems. JSON is the new black.

Nope never heard of simpleXML ... wish I had about a month ago You guys are teaching me a recurring theme over and over again .... I need to read more. It seems time and time again Im writing custom functions to do what is already in done.

I wouldn't call XML dead. It's simply evolved into different, more customized formats now.

I highly recommend you do not use microsoft products, especially for any web design. They're dreadful.

Try HTMLkit ( HTML Kit for more than editing HTML )
You can get it for free and it works better than anything microsoft ever made.

And yes I am biased against microsoft.

For info about xml, I highly recommend the w3c schools, as w3c is the organization that sets the standards.

The xml info is here: XML Tutorial

Thanks

I wouldn't go out of my way to learn something just for the sake of learning it.
