Textarea & Javascript

Using javascript, how do you make it so that next to a form textarea, there are links. Such as smiles. When you click on a smily, it will insert the text into the textarea. This forum does it here when posting a new thread. When you click on a smily, the code comes in the textarea. How is this done? Thanks!
