Is there a code to replace the function of a back button?

I did a fully ajax web application and so the page don't refresh at all. If a user click on the back button while in the application, they will be back at the login.php page which serve as a log out page also. In the end, they gets logged out.

So I want to store the history of actions the user did in a php session, make the function of the back button to run the actions the user did previously instead of loading the previous page.

I know it's possible because gmail made it. I just need to know how. hmm...

Wouldnt it better if your application reacts properly to the back button?
I don't know abaout GMail, but in google analytics, the "Back" support just sucks!

I know its hard, but your users expect the back button to work, its not nice to castrate the users browser!
For Jakob Nielsen, tahts the number 1 mistake (of 1999!), and I think he is right!
