Dont work your butt off to build your portfolio! I'd hate to see you get taken advantage of, which could happen. Just be careful. Another alternative would be to create your own examples, and just get new urls for them, www.geocities.com/whatever, etc. Then in your portfolio, you can post them as examples.

Why not? How do you get taken advantage of when you offer work for free? This isn't such an easygoing industry that someone will be impressed by some work you did just for your portolio, but whatever I don't know.

I don't know about what either of these people say is true but I haven't found it to be that way.

Basically look at what other people charge and charge that. Don't give away your work and know what you are worth. My portfolio is nil and all I have is a resume and a unfinished website and I get plenty of jobs.

Most of the time for myself it is the "appearence" of knowing what you are doing.
