So many languages...

Have worked with several languages over my programming history but have fallen into a niche with PHP and now am looking to do some desktop coding in my hobby time.

VB was a big favourite of mine as it allowed me to get things up and running fast but wasn't as strong in some areas as the other languages out there. (note: I was programming VB in version 4 and a little of 5 so that gives a time frame).

Now that'm preparing to do some desktop work again, what do you guys feel is the best language to go with? I don't want to reply on the .NET stuff as anyone who uses/tests my app needs the .NET frameowkr and it seems to add a hefty download.

However, what is the best with and best without. An example of one I want to mess with is I want to create a very basic macro program to run in the background while I am playing a game for example and output some key strokes to the game (<enter>Hello world!<enter>).
