Converting VB6 script to Python

I might be quite new to Python but because it is more interoperatable with different OS. I was hoping to convert a VB6 script that I have gotten into Python.

1) How difficult is it to do so for a normal programmer (assume no prior knowledge in python)?
2) Will Python be stable enough at current stage for windows GUI?
3) Which is better to offer as an opensource programme? VB or Python? I really hope that a small project of mine can be expanded freely.

Expert, advices please.
