excuse me if the topic was already created.

i'm thinking about learning some form of version control as I've noticed that in the real-world setting, most devs use either SVN or CVS to program within a group.

my question is, which one would be in my best interest to learn?

i know its about personal choice, but i figure some of you are actually programming for a real company and know what they tend to use when developing software.

I personally have never tried CVS, I use SVN all the time and like it a lot. Then again, since I haven't used CVS, I'm not qualified to compare the two.

It's supposed that SVN is a bug-feature fix upgrade of CVS.

Thus, as for now SVN cannot be considered a CVS substitute. It is a different system, similar to CVS.
In terms of speed svn better cvs.

As a whole review svn has slight edge over cvs.

from what I seen CVS has an advantage in some spots as did SVN.

All version control systems are essentially the same. Once you learn one, it's pretty easy to pick up another.

It's been a while since I've used either, but I definitely remember preferring SVN over CVS. Can't remember why exactly, though ...
