Best way to make money w PHP?

Hi,

I am interested in making some money by creating some kind of PHP software or API (as are we all).

I'm just not sure what to put the bulk of my effort into.... The main point is that for me there is no technical issues since I have more than 14 yrs coding experience.

So.. what do you, kind people, think would be the best product/API for someone to focus on in PHP (that would sell like hotcakes).

N.B. It doest matter if it exists already.. I am just interested in what you think is the most lucrative product/API to make!

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Justin

p.s. pls dont move to money making because this is aimed at php community. ta.

Lightbulb ....

Hm...

That's an interesting question.

If you are looking for a _product_, Forum softwares are extremely popular! Can you imagine how much money vBulletin ppl are making?

Other areas:
1. Content Management System (pMachine)
2. HelpDesk (perlDesk, though it's in Perl, it sells quite well)

I think these three products are in demand and probably (You never know!) will continue in demand.

I am myself in search to identify a web based app which I can make and then sell it to thousands of people! But I have not been able to decide. Trouble being, the above mentioned apps will really take lot of effort and I think you should write them in team of at least 2 people to make it really good!

All the best Justin!
Regards,
JD
P.S.: I have been fan of you and your script (ezSQL) the day I came to know about it! Thanks for that great script!

I've struggled with the same question.

1) It's hard to think of something original. It seems everythings been done. But if you COULD think of something no one has thought of yet, it might sell pretty well.

2) Though you could create something that is not original, would it sell if they could get it elsewhere for free? example: how much in sales has vB made, since the rise of phpBB?)

*shrug*

If you went with idea #2, your new addition would have to be outlandishly useful or unique for people to want to purchase it.

good luck to you

I think you should try to make a News script. I haven't seen many pay-to-use scripts like that.

You want to make money ? Do this and i guarantee you make loads of money. Create a remote web administrator for win2k using php. Make it support Apache, Xmail (open source mail server), PowerDNS (open source dns server), some ftp server, mysql, etc. Believe me do that and you'll be hooked as there isn't one like that. The only thing that exist is for example ensim or helm but they both lack support apache and mysql...which of course is a shame !

Yup the PHP market is very highly competitive, specially due to all those free softwares out there. What ever you put together, it should be feature rich enough to make the customer buy it and not download another free script.

That means your software should be easier to install and the support you provide must be quick and efficient.

Try to avoid saturated categories such as CMS, news managers and ofcourse bulletin boards

Give it a shot with free scripts and then move up to commercial stuff.

Good Luck!
