CSS Stylesheet & Template Builder
I recently added two new tools to my applications that made site design programming free. You don't even need to know html. Just point, click, apply and BAM you have a new site. Heck, it's so easy you can even apply myspace templates or any other template you want.
I'm not saying all this to brag, but I wanted to put it to the test to see what the limits are (if any). If you all have a favorite template then post the css here and I'll see how it fits with the tools. You can catch the live preview on the cgi blog live project site.
You don't need to register or anything. Just browse as a guest and see the results for yourself. Any type of template is allowed, even flash.
The first pick was vida! go check it out and let me know what's up. These changes were made to both the TechDex CGI Blog and Forum packages.

If your goal is to promote your technical skills, you should avoid content (particularly images) that may be controversial.
The images you have chosen will cause many people to close the browser after the page loads.

I think I made it clear what my intentions were. That was I wanted to put the tools to the test to see what the limits are (if any), then I asked if you all have a favorite template then post the css here and I'll see how it fits with the tools.
I've been here long enough and helped enough people, wrote scripts, posted code, etc. I don't honestly think anyone could take it for bragging. Sometimes when asking for a project impossible to do so without a bit of explaination about what you want tested and showing it at the same time.
I don't think the images are controversial. I've seen worse around the swimming pool at the college. Besides, when I said any template I didn't put a limit on anything but nudity and blatant violoence.
I do understand where you're coming from though on that.

I have to agree, and I think it probably should have been labeled "NSFW".
The images would definitely make some people uncomfortable and would get others fired in some companies. If I had opened that page when I worked at Microsoft, I'd have likely been in some serious trouble.

No one said you were bragging. (??)

Sure, but images with no potentially-offensive content could have been used just as easily (animals, scenic shots, etc). I think that's all that Wirehopper was saying.

Yes, but some of your potential clients might.

promoting your technical skills implies bragging. at least that's how I understood it. I also said I understood where he was coming from. We just have a dfference of opionion. I see similar or worse in the mail and things like victoria's secret and fashion magazines. I've seen worse on myspace. I don't think it's controversial at all.

"Promoting your technical skills" is not bragging. It is showing other people what you've done and, in this case, allowing them to comment and contribute.
With respect to 'controversial' - there are all sorts of images in the world and they mean different things to different people. In this case, your choice of images may seriously impact your goal of sharing your work. That was the point of the post.
I went to your page, and closed the browser. I didn't get to see the stylesheet and template builder - which is what I wanted to see, because I didn't want to look at the images you chose.

Right, but the point is that some potential clients will find it offensive or inappropriate. That you don't think those images are (or could be) controversial is a bit surprising. (Personally I enjoy looking at images of attractive ladies, but I wouldn't use those images to showcase my work and I don't know any mainstream company that would.)
I'd guess a fair number of female users would find those images to be borderline offensive, unprofessional, or overly suggestive. Even if they're not personally offended, they may understand that others would be, and they'll do as Wirehopper did and simply close the page. That's a potential client lost for no good reason.
Like I said, I'd recommend animals or scenic shots to avoid alienating potential customers or users, but the choice is yours.
I was also surprised to see it coded in perl. I don't see a lot of new perl projects these days, it seems most folks have moved to PHP, Python, or Ruby.

I had someone send me a new template that they liked. Its a myspace template. The whole point was to get across how easy it is to change the look of the site from just one area. I am taking some progressive steps like providing screen shots and other things. I did get alot of great feed back and a new feature request from one of the users here. I always appreciate the feedback.
Anyway, the suggestion was that while the abilty to post videos is good there wasn't a way to post your own content, let's say a musician or video producer or what have you, so I spent the last couple days doing that. Baring the long explainations I finally updated the listing on hotscripts.

I should have done this first, but anyone who wants to see the css stylesheet and template builder first hand let me know. I'll grant you temporary admin access so you can play around with it, or even try out different templates of your own.
And yes, it's written in Perl. Most people have moved on to something else for the sake of ease and convenience. I should say that the general public has moved on to something else, but to this day Perl is the backbone for alot of infrastructure and technology. Security, banking and finance, Communications, etc. Usually where you see legacy C# applications, Ruby, Python, etc you'll find perl.
Python and Ruby walk hand in hand with Perl. But Ruby is really old-school. Ever hear people talk about Ruby on Rails? Yeah... old school.
Alot of my contracts, even military contracts are perl or perl-related. The money is rediculous too because there is a shortage of perl programmers out there. If you do a google search for perl jobs you'll see jobs for 70k a year and up. like I said, rediculous.
