Hi to everyone.

My name's Michael. I'm a professional graphic and website designer, and extremely lapsed former computer programmer. I'm hoping that participating in these forums can help my web-building efforts.

I'm currently building two websites for my full-time employer, and four for personal freelance clients. I've recently discovered the absolute joy of using "off-the-shelf" pre-written scripts (CGI, Java, php/MySQL) to greatly enhance the functionality of the sites I build.

Whether for my day job or for my clients, I would much rather find a pre-written GPL or commercial script than attempt to create one myself. The "lapsed programmer" thing aside, it's just more time-efficient to use a ready-made solution. Examples include things such as:

-- bulletin board (forum) systems
-- "help wanted" recruiting systems (job postings)
-- file management/uploads (for PDF files)

I'm saving my full-time employer tens of thousands of dollars by creating our two separate sites in-house. I know they're not going to mind spending a few hundred dollars on top-notch pre-written code to add dynamic features to my static (GoLive-created) HTML pages.

I'm hoping that, through this forum, I can explain what type of off-the-shelf functionality I need, and have someone direct me to the appropriate pre-written script. It can be your own, or one you've used. I'm quite adept at integrating such solutions, but often times will need advice on what solutions to use.

So...is this the place to ask for such advice? If so, am I allowed to include hyperlinks to websites I'm building to illustrate the type of functionality I'd like added? (Or is that considered spam here?)

Thanks.
