MySQL installation on Apache 2.0.49/WinXP

Hello all,

I'm sure you see posts like this all the time. I read as many as I can find in my googlings, but cannot seem to resolve this installation. I am running Apache 2.0.49 with PHP, both working fine. I am attempting to install MySQL 4.0.18, but have had absolutely no luck. I have worked through several tutorials as well as the documentation at mysql.com.

When I get to the point in the documentation that tells me to enter C:\mysql\bin\mysqld --console I get the error "040163 Can't find messagefile 'C:\phpdev\mysql\share\english\errmsg.sys
Aborting"
which I recognize as a problem from my initial installation of PHPDev (which also didn't work), which has no uninstallation file. I don't know how to fix this.

On attempting to start MySQL (net START mysql):
"The Mysql service could not be started.
A system error has occurred.
System error 1067 has occurred.
The process terminated unexpectedly."

mysqlshow: "Cannot connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' (10061)"

There was also a telnet problem a while back, but I can no longer reproduce it. Pretty much everything else I do results in the PHPdev file not being found (which is probably because I deleted it). Maybe that would be a good place to start? Anyone know how I can fix that problem?

Many many many thanks for any advice you can offer. I'd really like to get this working. If you would like to contact me off-list that would be fine. Please just include MySQL in the subject line.

So, answering my own question, it turns out that deleting C:\windows\my.ini and c:\my.cfg did the trick. Everything fell into place once I got rid of those, which makes me wonder why MySQL didn't work in the first place, before I started messing with things.
