cms portal for different subdomains

how would u install a cms portal so that subdomains e.g.
category1.host.com
category2.host.com
run their own cms portal independently with their own information etc. Because i dont want to install each one seperately on each subdomain. Can i simply set up individual MySQL databases and point them to www.host.com CMS? and each subdomain would have its CMS portal with seperate databases so that they dont interefere with each other?

what you need each portal needs to have a database and a different installation. for 5 portals, you need 5 installations and 5 databases. There's no way around that.

if you have access to the apache server configuration it could be possible with slight modification of the CMS of your choice.

hmmm.. then how do sites like www.invisionfree.com install forums instantly upon signup? is it like preinstalled or something? Because i want to do the same thing but with a CMS instead of a forum.

most probably they will have a script to just copy the files to a new folder and create the db when you signup.

if i didn't have too much work i would help you out. well it's not that hard, i bet you can do it yourself. is the host on windows or linux ? if it's windows it's fairly easy..just create a batch file to create the dir and copy the files in it, execute it whenever someone signs up and have it create a db.
