I need to install a mailing list application that will handle several thousand users (need to be able to import them) for a few different lists.

I need to be able to send users either text or HTML based on their preference. And I need MySQL so that I can integrate the subscribers of these email lists with our membership management system, which runs on PHP/MySQL and is custom coded.

I have the option of using Lyris, but it does not have MySQL capability. I am looking for an alternative, and there is no budget for more purchasing. I would like something as robust as Lyris (or as close as possible) but open source.

**I am NOT looking for spam software but rather software for legitimate opt-in lists. Please do not recommend software meant for spammers, I must have the opt-in / opt-out features.

www.octeth.com has an mailinglist manager. it is commercial software though, so you will have to pay for it. but it is by far the most solid mailinglist manager I've ever worked with.

Dada Mail at http://dadamail.org has an option to use a MySQL backend. It's free.
