Whats best asp or php ?

Hi all...

nice forum here... ok here the deal, i been jabbing in php and suddenly i see that people are wanting asp programmers..., i like php since it has a more close relation to c/c++ which i think is fundamental for all programming (not counting assembly....) I must admit that i'm a apache, mysql and php fan i like the freeware/opensource concept. But if must be i will pay for the better tools.

So the toud in the pants are is asp faster, more reliable jada jada.... than php. And most of all is there any difference in the things they can do ?

and please if you have any comments, let them be justified and not just "i like bill Gates" kinda.... since i wil make a clean shift to asp if convinced that its the better of the two.

Well I would go with PHP.

PHP is a cross platform programming language, it will work on windows it will work on linux (while ASP is windows only).
PHP can access multiple database languages (I belive ASP can only use MS-SQL).
PHP 5 has a lot more functions that ASP.
ASP is based on Visual Basic (Good reason not to use it)
PHP is based on C++ (Come on you gota love it).

PHP is extremely flexible and supported for several Database platforms. From my experience, ASP, while on a Microsoft Server, is generally slower than PHP.

I am an ASP->PHP convert! Being able to close my statements with semi colons makes me feel warm and fuzzy somewhat; // *oh that feeling's coming back!* ~~

Anyway, ASP can be run on Unix boxes with Chilli ASP. Perhaps the ASP.NET would be the more serious contender for PHP. (But to choose between .NET vs Java... oh, another discussion altogether!)
