automatic subdomain

I'm trying to create a site that I need to do this:

When a user signs up with a specified subdomain name, I need to create that subdomain and move some files into the subdomain.

I have no idea how to create a subdomain, but my php skills are very advanced heh.
If I'm using cpanel.. how do I do it?
What about ensim?

Is this even a control panel thing or will php actually do this?

Thanks

WHM auto pilot auto-creates accounts in cpanel/whm..(IE, for a hosting business)

I don't know how to create sub-domains, :-), but I've always seen it done in perl.

I found that it's done in .htaccess

supposedly it reads the files in from a specified directory, meaning that if i goto subdomain.somesite.com it'll read in the files from somesite.com/subdomain or something of that nature.

Also when I asked why isnt it redirecting, I was told that "wildcarded dns" stopped it?

Anyone got any code I can put in a .htaccess to make this work?
Thanks
