The manual is good imo, but once again, imo it's not because the writers use programming terms that make it hard to understand.

i would search google "php tutorials"

Thanks for the advice! But I would I specifically go about writing a custom modification for a vBulletin?

it is best to start off learning to customise scripts, the way i started was experimenting with different variables to see what did what. But webmonkey does have some of the best tutorials you can find. You have to start basic, so you may not get to being able to do complex stuff for a month or so... but if you jump in at the deep end you will fail miserable and that will severely deter you.
Start simple, in scripts the simple things normally have the biggest effects (unless you go for all out customisation.

like xxvatarxx said, start out by learning simple things and play around with existing scripts. I taught myself fairly good PHP in about 2 weeks in this way. it also helps if you have previous programming knowlege.

Well.. if the "learning php" part doesn't sound too useful to you, you could always just go ahead and start coding anyway. You write php using the text editor of your choice and a keyboard.
