I was wondering if there was an effective way to connect to Hotmail, Yahoo, or AOL and retrieve the number of unread messages and display the senders of those new messages.

That is all that is needed... nothing fancy.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

You will have to use the POP/IMAP functions to access these mailboxes (but I'm not sure if they offer POP access - if you can have your email program read your mailboxes on these services then you can do it from PHP also).
