one-page form/catalog in php, data fed in with .csv file?

Dear all,

I'm breaking my brains here and would appreciate any and all input and ideas you could offer to help me get started with a good solution.

A client of mine (selling computer supplies) wants to have a simple order form for their customers. For this they would like to use the excel spreadsheet they can generate with updated pricing from one of their main supplier's site.

The excel spreadsheet is fairly simple (http://www.kyburz.net/projects/is/catalog_sample.html), has however 900+ items.

The pricing fluctuates fairly often and it would be ideal if my client could upload/import that excel spreadsheet in an as easy as possible manner.

I was told I could do that with php and MySQL (both installed on my clients hosting account), but I do not have a clue where to start really. Spent the better half of today reading and surfing and browsing and finally got pointed to this site :-)

I just started (in connection with this project) learning php, have however experience with installing and running shopping cart systems written in Perl. So I should be able to follow instructions and install scripts ;-)

My apologies for the long posting. Thought I'd better explain clearly what I'm struggling with here. Please let me know if you need more information.

Thanks a bunch for all input :-)

If I get it right the problem is how to read Excel file using php.
If so try this - maybe it helps:
