Unhappy Installing mySQL on a WinXP Pro machine

Hello girls and boys

I am running a PC with windows XP pro. And am successfully running IIS, ASP and PHP (not that it's a major achievement...!)

I would also like to run mySQL on my PC so that I can develop my PHP offline. (Don't have broadband in my area yet, so developing this stuff online ain't much fun!)

Is this advisable? Can a normal OS (eg not a server OS) handle that type of thing? If so, do I need to install any other windows services to run mySQL?

I've had a look at the mySQL downloads page (http://www.mysql.com/downloads/mysql-4.0.html), and it's like another language. I mean, what is Cygwin?

How *simple* is this to install? Do I run the risk of mashing up my OS beyond all recognition?!?!?! (I am fairly competent, but some of the installation notes look a bit hefty!)

Any pointers / feedback would be much appreciated, as this mySQL DB stuff is something I'm just getting into.

Ta, L x

I run MySql, Apache and PHP on my WinXP machine with no problems at all.

This is an easy to follow tutorial on installing all 3 and getting them to work together on your machine.

First of all explaining your question regarding the installation of Cygwin: dont.

Cygwin is a unix shell port to Windows. It basically lets you take the simple programs that run under Linux and use them on Windows. This is good if your wanting to develop client-side applications that require compilation. But for running a webserver, stick to IIS or Apache.

MySQL installs easily on a Windows XP Professional machine. It comes with an installer executable that walks you through where it should be installed and what not.

PHP should automatically detect the presence of MySQL since the MySQL installer also installs a process that runs when your computer turns on.

Cool

OK, thanks for your help everyone... will have a bash at this (although it will probably take me about a fortnight to download it on dial-up!)

This might not be the last you hear from me! He he!

Thanks again,

Linsey
