Question Merchant account for php website

Hiya
I'm on the learning path for php, mysql etc and am setting up a website.
I am at a stage where I will be wanting to hook the site into some kind of merchant account processing ie: Paypal and accepting credit cards.
I'm hoping that folk have had experience of this and can point me in the right direction as to who offers the best and most reliable service and how easy/difficult it is to hook into a php website design.
I'm looking for an account that would take on all the security responsibility and protocols

hope this all makes sense and I hope I've put this in the right place

thanks
mogant

I use Authorize.net on a couple of dozen of my sites and I'm reasonably satisfied with them. I wouldn't ever use PayPal again, but that's just me. YMMV.

Their site is down

I was curious about this as well since im looking for a merchant account service, etc.

I couldnt get to the website but i did a search on it and came across this news story about it being offline right now. I hope this isn't common for them.

I've used them for over 5 years (almost 10,000 transactions) and haven't ever had an issue with them. This is actually the first time I've ever heard of them having an outage. They're a large, popular credit card gateway system, but anyone can get knocked offline if things go bad. I wouldn't rule them out based on this one event, but it's up to you.

Sounds like they have been ok for you
But I do have concerns when such a provider has such a serious outage
I would have thought they would have some sort of Disaster Recovery backup in place but obviously not.

Anyone had any dealings with Barclays merchant????

They all have there problems.

The only way to have a trouble free solution to internet merchant, is to have the end user insert their cash in the "cup holder" of their machine...
