Question Web Content Management Help Needed

I've tried to get a couple different PHP web content management programs working, and it just ain't working. I'm sure it's something I'm doing, because I don't know PHP, or any other computer language for that matter, but I've gotten Perl scripts and a couple of Javascripts to work.

Would someone be willing to help me set up phpCMS or phpWebSite? Or can someone recommend a good FREE web content management system? I'd really appreciate it.

I have heard that phpWebSite now requires Shell access on a server to peform an install.. If this is the case i really think its a bad thing because alot of hosts (even pay ones) arent giving out Shell's because of the security issues.

Most CMS's (i know phpWebSite does) have a good documentation and alot of users that would have expertese in the area and would be willing to help you.

If you have gotten Perl scripts to work, you should find PHP alot easier to work with.. Although most of the syntax is the same.

If you try installing one of them, give us the error you are getting and we can help you on your way

Chris

Thanks. Well, right now, phpCMS isn't recognizing the $home variable correctly. It's set up as HOME := /parser (I might have the syntax slightly wrong, but the idea is "home" equals "/parser"). I tried capitalizing $home as it seems to be in the project.ini file, but nothing seems to work. URLs look like http://www.mywebsite.com/parser/$home/doc/doc_en/index.htm. If I got that solved, I could move on with the script--I may or may not have more problems.

With phpWebSite, I can't make the configuration script because it can't access the database. I've tried setting up a username with password and a database name, but nothing works.

I was just looking for a way to keep my site organized and make it easier to add new files and have the cms handle putting it into proper format. I might forget about it, since at this stage, my site is manageable. Eventually, though, I hope to have a very large site, and a friend suggested I get a cms. To be honest, I'm very unfamiliar with them.

Thanks to both of you. I'll be looking at those. I bookmarked the jvega.com one, actually.

Actually, can you tell me how to set up a database? I don't mean everything like tables and all that, but why couldn't I access it? I set up a code, and it puts my account name before the database name and before the user name: accountname_databasename, accountname_username. The database my server gives me is mySQL. I just want to know how to access it. I get an error saying that user has no permission to access the database.

I would assume you are using Cpanel or a similar program to make your databases via a web administration panel?

To do it in cpanel, you create the users (and they will be in the form of accountname_username) and your databases (form of accountname_database).

Then on the main databases page there should be a section for you to assign permissions for accessing the database to your previously created users.

Hope that helps

Thanks. I got it working, but I'm not sure I want a cms after all. I love that they can generate pages easily, and handle certain functions, but there are some things I want different in various pages, and I'm not sure if there's an easy way to do that. Thanks, anyway.

Just for the heck of it, can you tell me what cms you consider the best? Thanks.
