What should i learn PHP or ASP.NET

Damit i don't know which one is better for my situation. I want to make a site where the user has alot of power, something like a personals site. Would php or asp.net be better for a site where the user has alot of free customization power. Example : upload pics and and add text and save it on the site to view it and so that others can view their profiles?? later on?

My problem about asp.net is heard u need to know another programming language like VB to use it, thats my down fall.

Anyway please i need neutral answers.

First to give you a bit of information on my background so you know where I am coming from.

I have several years programming in ASP and a little over a year with ASP.NET. I have just about a year of really scripting in PHP plus a year or two modding PHP scripts.

ASP really was not a great language at all. It was messy and slow.

ASP.NET is alot better and really runs well if coded correctly.

PHP is also very powerful and still much faster than ASP.NET. If I am building a powerful website I would choose PHP everytime. I have been able to do everything I have wanted with PHP even if I did not know how to do it. Not only is it a great language it has a great community that will help you out if you get stuck. The tools to develope are cheap to free, the code is easy to learn, and the power is equal if not stronger that .NET.

Just my opinion

If this was a poll, I'd vote for Turbo Pascal. I'm sure it would be neutral enough ?

Can someone move it to a general programming chat, becuase probably only people who like php will come in here. Pos tthe same thing in the ASP and see what u get lol. I think PHP is more for personal and semi somercial. All the big companies use asp.

Hi,

Agree with Mud in that this post should be placed in a more general forum than here.

...or JSP (J2EE).

PHP can be used for large projects, I guess, Yahoo! being a famous example, but overall, PHP was not born that way ("PHP" stood for "Personal HomePage" originally, as a lot of you may know). I guess it is trying to be, though, with PHP5's more complete OOP and all.

If donkon is totally new to server-side scripting, then I'd recommend PHP because it is easy to pick up (which is a great thing). You can always transfer your programming skill in one language to another later if you must. =)
