How to make modules based site

Can anyone guide me how to make the modules based site. Perfect eg. is phpnuke.
Like in phpnuke we can add/remove modules as per our need.

The best way to look how this is done is by checking the code of phpNuke, postNuke, XoopS and that kind of software. they've got it all figured out already, so why not be inspired by it?
