point me in the right direction

I need someone to point me in the right direction. I am trying to develop a website which has a subscription portion to it. The site will be similar to a diet site in that members will need to be able to track their progress. Under the subscription wall, I want to have the members be able to post personal online journal entries and have other such interacitive tools. Is the journal entry part simply a blog type script, or do I need some different specific programming?

Also, I need a program which my members can input thier progress data, and that I can track, analyze, and breakdown thier data for them and put it into a graphical format. IS this a java applet, or something else?

Thanks!

for the graphics you dont need java you can use the gd library which works with PHP. As for the type you should code it on PHP and the database Type most reccomended would be MySql. Thats just my opinion
