fading links

i need to know a script that fades links.

like i have a link, when i hover it turns gray, how can i make it fade to grey instead of just instantly changing colour?

can't you just use css styles to do that?

i use a css. but whats the coding to make it fade... never made a proper css before

ok simple solution maybe not what your looking for but make it fade to the background colour like on a mouse over? or do want it to sorta die out
