i am planning to launch a new website in the coming months which will in time have a number of members and will be a site based around a given subject or music.
I was wondering if anyone would be able to point me in the right direction, in terms of something in particular i'll be needing in order to get this site going.
I'm looking for a portal system, which can be run with php and mysql capabilities, with the core features of a portal system, eg, news, private messaging, and so on, but it must also include private messaging, user profiles, and the ability to use a custom template.
Ideally i'd love a free/GPL script, though i'd consider a paid one if it covered all the features i require, or maybe had other interesting/useful features.
an ideal solution would be one that i came across some months ago, but unfortunately did not bookmark and do not know the name of, where these features were all implemented, and the template system was perfect.
the kind of template system i'd be interested in would be one where tags were usedwhich would be replaced with the appropriate content, for example, where:
(news)
would be replaced with the news, so that if i designed a layout in photoshop, for example, and sliced and exported to html, in my layout, if i had a table or area where i'd like the news to be shown, i'd simply insert that tag of "(news)" and this would show when running online.
any help with this would very much be appreciated.

PS. a system pointed out to me recently was VisionGate Portal...
Something like this would be ideal.. just not that one in particular?
Also, i know i can't expect to find something with all the features i'd like in there, but integration with Vbulletin forums would be amazing!
