Help needed with custom php/mysql block

Hi,

I would like to create a block for my XMB portal which is totally custom as I would like it linked to my online petition.

What I would like to achieve is the following:

I have a table called "guestbook" which contains all the petition entries. I would like to have a block which outputs something like:

UK UFO Petition
---------------

Total Signatures : 249 (last id taken from id field in guestbook table)

Random Comment : comments (randomly pulled from message field in guestbook table)

and then a link to the petition (that I can add after)

I have attached a block that I have deleted all the stuff not needed.
I would be extremely happy with any assistance. The connection doesnt need doing in this script as it is handled elsewhere.
