I have a program, I know it's good. I know those who whould have use for it would like it, if not love it. I need to let those people know it is available, and for that I need some targeted traffic.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I too have created a system which I believe is far better than anything else out there, however I do not have the resources to market the product. My choice was to offer the product for free. Yes I know this seems like madness but here is my reasoning:
As it's free, more and more people are downloading and using the product.
This 'snow-ball' effect gives my site more links to, thereby improving its search engine listing.
I am currently developing the next version which may have a small charge associated with it

Or someone from a big software company might want to buy you out!

Free doesn't really work for me as the idea is to make money off the software. I don't really care much about site traffic itself, except as it relates to getting people to download, and eventually buy, my program.

Fine but how do you make money from a programme that sites on the net that nobody knows about? If you have money to promote your software then use google ad words or better still overture.com.

Let Computer Magazines include it for free on their CD's ...

You can publish it on Download.com . It will bring you buyers for sure, if the program is good.
