How to build a secure server?

I recently bought myself a cheap dedicated server and i am planning on configuring it the right way so it will be secure. So, I was wondering if anyone could link me to some "'howto's" to configure a server to be secure and so on.

there is no one way to do that. i would start with a quality firewall and virus scanner. add in an ids/ips solution. keep only the ports necessary open to the public, and ensure that your scripts are secure.

lets start with this

The URL in the first link you posted does not match the displayed value, and does not work. This should - http://www.programmingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=28637

What about guarding against DDOS attacks? My friend told me he is behind a good switch to prevent that from happening, however, I do not have one. So, how would i guard against that? I think it is possiable to do it with the firewall but I'm not sure how. ;(

a switch has no way of mitigating a ddos attack that is something that needs to be address with your firewall, ids/ips and possibly your router (depending upon feature sets)

I see. Also, I have heard that most people have a dedicated server just for their databases. Why is this and what is different of the database server (such as the specs of it)?

the reason is to allow separate data processing for database intesnive applications. typicaly they have more ram and sometimes dual processors. this allows the database to run better while distributing the load of web requests to another server
