I have no idea what sites you allready visited, but here are a couple of suggestions:
http://www.debianhelp.co.uk/php5.htm
http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/php/php-upgrading.xml
http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/php-lin...upgrade-howto/

I've never worked on Linux before, so I really have no idea if those sites will be helpfull, but in a way it all makes sence to me , so it'll probably make even more sence to you

What flavor of linux are you using?

Most have some sort of packaging system that might make it easier unless you have some custom compiled modules.
