This is a awesome piece of software. Fast, stable and highly customizable. The friendly community also gave me enough help with installing the forum and installing some mods to it, plus there is a great selection of Themes. The release cycles are very slow. Only thing wrong with it for me. Hope that will change. Oh, yeah, if it was right that SMF would be harvesting email addresses, it would not have millions of users and thousands of active forums and people would have seen it in the code... Even some government stuff uses SMF! The guy below should just fix up his server security instead of blaming SMF, hahaha lol. I think it's a competitor sabotage.. It's secure folks, do not worry.
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
What a shame since the design and ease of use of this program is excellent. But don't let that fool you. The designers have a way of harvesting all your users email addresses. I tested this as soon as I started getting spam from dozens of worthless senders with offers of every kind you can imagine. It was only days after installing this program for my website forum and placing previous entries of users with their email addresses. I finally changed the ones to fake email addresses so they would not also be spammed. It's an inside job of the programmers since the settings in the admin area is set to not reveal email addresses. You can test this on a website you don't mind using for proof of this. Open a new yahoo or hotmail account with any name. Use it to register as admin and you will get dozens of spam within a day or two. Now register another new email address and use it to register as a 'new user'. Within a few days it will be loaded with spam. If you check the admin area to 'not reveal email addresses' you can prove the designers of this program are the one's obviously sending the spam since there's no other way a user from a browser has access to the user email addresses. Beware before you upload this program if you respect your users who have to put up with chaning their email address due to spam contamination from the designers of Simple Machines forum program.

My site has turned out great with SMF. So much, that I have turned my forum into a website and it all runs on SMF, even the custom pages and portal! I've gone from the default look like this: http://www.simplemachines .org/community/index.php? theme=1 To a customized look like this: http://www.gamerzgarage.c om SMF has wonderful support, is free (and always will be), and they even have people willing to write mods and codes for you! Just request it! SMF is great and I recommend it for anyone!
Features may be ok but the support is really poor. To answer just a simple query they take around a week. Their server is down most of the time. They have really wasted my time. Wrong answers to support questions. Rude webmaster. PHPBB is really much better.
Support forum for the community forum software, SMF. Support is first rate and always very fast. Many issues will have already been dealt with and the vast majority of answers can be found by performing a simple search. When it comes to extra packages and modifications to the standard forum package, if it hasn't already been done, there are many very knowledgeable people, both part of the development team and community members, who will gladly help create new features etc. I've used many different message boards over the years and SMF impresses me the most, both the software and support. Top marks. ;)
