SocialEngine is a PHP-based social network platform that lets you create a social network or online community on your website. Right out of the box, your social network will offer nearly all of the features found on today's popular social networks. You are given absolute control over the appearance and structure of your social network. Add-on features as you see fit, including blogs, groups, photo and video albums, messaging, search, browse, subnetworks, spam protection, invite-only features, comments, news feeds, custom privacy settings, advertising banner management, who's online, custom profile fields, and more. SocialEngine is also the only 100% customizable script available, with a template file for every single page on your network and 100% unencrypted PHP source code. Don't go with the cookie-cutter design of other products. Be unique!

SocialEngine has improved their code a lot, in the meanwhile SocialEngine version 3 was released. There are tons of plugins and mods for SocialEngine. Thats why we decided to create a new SocialEngine Community: http://SocialEngine-base. net. Find plugins, tutorials, mods and discussions.

Very poor code (I had to fix several bugs myself) and groups feature is all but useless because there is no group communication besides group page comments. Exceedingly hard to customize. Way overpriced, and basically all around waste of time and money. I could have written my own system by now with the amount of time I've wasted on this. I should also mention that the developers don't seem to be very experienced and there is absolutely no written documentation or user community for support.
