Dear Hot Scripts Members
Besides my love for the Web, I have a passion for aviation. I
occasionally play Flight Simulator, listen to live air traffic
control feeds or enjoy an episode of
Air Emergency that examines air crash accidents. It is
amazing to realize that most air disasters are caused by human
error, either during maintenance or during aircraft operation.
Following each air crash, investigators review the maintenance
records that give a chronological breakdown of the history of
the aircraft. At times, a little erroneous change some months
ago can have an impact on the proper functioning of an aircraft
in the long run.
The same thing applies to our web sites - you maintain a web
site, it's wise to keep a maintenance log of changes and events
as they pertain to the site. More than once, you'll come into
situations that correlate with past site activity. These logs
will provide valuable information to explain situations such as
changes in traffic, conversion or revenue. You can keep track of
changes to your site's design or coding, launch of new features
and services, downtime or other networking issues, and so on.
I personally use Twitter for
my maintenance log. By creating a Twitter account and setting it
as
private, I can easily tweet any site changes or events, and
I can share the maintenance log with my co-workers. You can also
keep your maintenance log in a Word document.
