XAMPP is a very easy to install Apache Distribution for Linux, Solaris, Mac OS X and Windows. The package includes the Apache web server, MySQL, PHP, SQLite, Perl, a FTP-Server and phpMyAdmin.
The new releases contain both new versions of PHP: 5.0.x and 4.3.x. PHP 5 is enabled by default, but in case of problems you're able to switch easily back to PHP 4.

6 Months back I had very little experience of apache, mysql and php and needed an easy way to test PHPNuke systems locally before uploading to my webserver. I tried manual setup of all the various packages necessary and failed miserably, I then tried a host of these all-in-ones that frankly were more complicated than the single elements and was about to give up when I cam across this software!! OMG I wish i had found it sooner. With one minor setting change to the config file I had a free running web server installed locally. None of my system files were corrupted as had been the case with other packages and the whole product was intuitive.
Once I had XAMPP up and running I found it easier and easier to delve into the realms of apache, mysql and php and to be able to see the results. I made mistakes and if these were toooooo severe I simply deleted the package and reinstalled it. The whole thing takes no more than ten minutes.
For "noobs" like me this is the ideal starter package and it grows as you want it to not as someone else decides!!
It is well supported and regularly updated and fits across main platforms I have now tried it on both Linux (which I was again relatively new to) and Windows which I use for the majority of my testing. It is ideal for both.

I am able to install a LAMP on my own. But XAMPP is so easy to install, all packages are up to date. e.g. Apache 2.0.53, MySQL 4.1.10, PHP 5.0.3 & 4.3.10, Perl 5.8.6 and many more, makes XAMPP your application for powerful webservices and webserver. It supports CMS like Mambo, Typo3 and Imperia. You can install every PHP-application I know: bulletin boards (phpBB, IPB, WBB, etc.) and guestbooks ... I think every script on Hotscripts.com will run on XAMPP if it's written in PHP or Perl. The best open source product I know beside phpMyAdmin.

Very good idea but still not perfect.
Anyway it's a beta on MacOS X. Very simple installation and a lot of useful modules integrated.
Go on like this and it will come out excellent.

In December, 2004, I was a complete novice in all aspects of web servers. I attempted and failed to install apache, php, perl from their sources. But them=n, I found this project! I installed version 1.4.9 quickly and easily. I have been updating after every new version, and I know that I will always be downloading the latest software. I now have several domains and ftp account and, I couldn't have gotten here without XAMPP.

I have set up Apache with PHP + MySQL on quite some machines now and know that it sometimes can be a bit of a problem for a beginner. I think it's refreshing to see that someone is actually doing something for those beginners. Works great :)

I recently downloaded and installed XAMPP server software for Windows and I must tell you that is 100% effective. I have tried for the last 3 weeks to configure Apache, PHP, and MySQL on a Windows XP sytem without success. There are many tutorials out there but is very difficult to do, UNTIL I found XAMPP. Bravo guys, thanks for designing this application. I now have a web server I can practice on instead of pulling my hair out.

Easy to setup, excellent set of tools for web developers of any kind. Somewhere complicated for newbies it's highly recommended for Web-programmers and Web-designers. Outstanding start configuration, a lot of features, servers and services needed for comfort work. I'm working with XAMPP for almost 6 month - no complains. Must-have!

If your just starting out or need to get an in-house test server up and rumming XAMPP is a great product. Contains everything in one package install. I used XAMPP (after configuring my own setup for years) on the Windows platform. They offer a OS/X version, but, according to their web site upgrades tend to be lagging as of this review. For those of you in the Winx environment XAMPP is top notch, for OS/X users check out MAMP. Both are great for n00bs and experienced users tired of LAMP compiles.

I use this package for testing different PHP and CGI scripts, I LOVE IT! If you want to learn scripts, web design, and other web activities, then I advice this program. Great for Beginners to advanced users.

After have problems with other installation packages, i was recommended Xampp. The instalation process was fantastic as was the configuration. Anyone like me who has no major knowledge of installing servers will find this a real gemm!
Very tidy control panel allows easy access, the only downside is their support forum is limited for english folks mainly in german
