MAMP is a wonderful package containing Apache, MySQL, PHP, GD, with features that can have you up and running with a simple drag and drop to your applications folder. One A+ feature is the ability to change the document root on the fly! This is excellent for consultants developing and managing changes to multiple sites.
XAMPP is the equivilent on the WinX side, a great product, but short coming of updates. MAMP vs manual compile of a LAMP dev. environment, is a blessing!
