ChaNT is a flexible, powerful, cross-browser and easy to use open source web-based chat system written in PHP and JavaScript. Support for BBCode, 3D Animated Smileys with a IM like toolbar for formatting your chat messages. It does not require any browser plugins like Java or Flash. Also it not requires MySQL, all data stored in ordinary files.
ChaNT included privacy features such as traffic encryption(client-server- client) and client side password hashing. It have powerful admin control panel and can integrated with many forums and CMS. ChaNT supports all major browsers such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Safari and Mozilla. It has a minimalistic and an elegant user interface which looks and feels a lot like a IM desktop application, since it uses AJAX. ChaNT is very fast, light weight and makes chatting more fun.

Ok so, you download the zip, unzip and head for the README. Follow README and install 'cept it seems some of the instructions are missing! Luckily I know what I am doing (STOP the manical laughter!) and was able to sort out what files needed CHMODding and why I couldn't log in to admin.Now its all working it's lovely!Had about 6-7 people chatting at once so far, and it's held up well, no load on my server either Guys, sort the install instructions and you got a winner!

The application is basically alright but it still has some issues that seriously undermine its apparently high user rating. First of all it's not handling UTF-8 as it should and some very specific nicknames are prohibited (you cant use underscore or space in a nick). There are also issues regarding sudden disappearances of options in the administrative menu and so on. In my opinion the lack of support for MySQL database is a serious dissadvantage. Other than that it works :)

In short I would rather have a script that costs me money than one that costs me as much time as was required with this one.
Good:
a) It IS fast with <10 users
b) It handles sign-ups and login seamlessly
Bad:
1) DOCUMENTATION
2) Custom BBCode parsing difficult to customise
3) icons disappeared at odd intervals
4) users timed out even while typing
5) Dramatic speed loss at 10-15+ users online
This script might become great later, as the visuals & speed have potential, but it's not ready yet
