PHPOpenChat is a web based chat software written in PHP. PHPOpenChat is database independent, based on the MVC architecture, and object oriented. This frees up the creators to concentrate on a great customizable user interface and high quality administration functionality. It provides mail, moderating, watch-server, private channels, ignore list, text filters, inline user images and a easy to handle admin tool.

This php based chat script was the first I have found, which can handle more than about 150 concurrent users without problems.
But the installation procedure needs to be a little bit easier.

WOW, well it takes alot for me to give a 5 chilli rateing however PHPOpenChat earns it. Free, Fast, Easy, Powerfull, and simply one of the best chats i have seen for a while. Its admin interface is great and the instalation is quick and easy even for a novice of PHP and MySQL. The only thing i would say is get a copy of PHPMyAdmin to help with the server info.

Couldn't get it to work - zero help and obscure error messages. If your ISP has 'safe_mode' or has defined 'open_basedir' then you'll have problems, otherwise it may be OK.

This is a complete waste of time unless you intend to reconfigure your entire server. The install program doesn't work. The instructions are wrong and there's no support. Don't waste your time with this piece of garbage.
This is without a doubt the worst script I've ever downloaded here. They should force these ppl to know what they're doing before they can post their scripts here.

I spent about 5 hours tracking down and correcting issues with this application. The application itself is good. I'd have given it 4 out of 5 easy if not for the following issues;
1. The template files make use of <?= a lot. This only works on systems with short_open_tag set to "on". I've never seen any host have this on.
2. The default ADODB install uses "public" instead of "var" in some areas (in my case the mysql specific includes) which, to the best of my knowledge, is a PHP5 specific construct. The script claims to run on PHP >= 4.2.2. Not possible with these variable declarations. A simple global search and replace fixed this for me. Finding the source of te issue on the other hand...
I won't be touching the adodb stuff, it's obviously the wrong version to ship with the app, but I will submit the updated template files and the recomendation to roll back to a compliant version of adodb.
