MyTopix by Jaia Interactive was designed with the smaller sites and close-knit communities in mind. It has many features that other boards have minus all the bloat -- support for avatars, image uploading, etc, its all there. Mytopix has optional categories seperation, or a simple 'no-category' flat topic listing where people can hold discussions.
With an intuitive admin frontend, and an easily editable template syntax, along with template and page caching, its poised to handle large datasets without issue.
Who needs one of the big contenders when you can have EVERYTHING you need in a small HIGHLY extensible solution? Give MyTopix a whirl, and support your user driven community efficiently!

ADP Forum is a discussion board system that doesn't use any database, but instead stores all the data in txt files. The forum is highly customizable, you can easily edit: colours, fonts, icons. There is a detailed readme file that explains how to install. It features: user authentication, member ratings, avatars, configuration panel, administration, email notifications, smiley option, edit and delete options. Languages available: English, Italian, French, Spanish, Swedish, Polish, Finnish, Norwegian, Slovakian, Bosnian.

Fubar is a small package (50kb zipped) and doesn't need a MySQL database. It's features include: - user registration with captcha code / user profile (incl. offsite avatars) - forum administration (settings, boards, categories) - boards can be normal, readonly and hidden - access for boards can be set to everyone, mods or just admins - topics can be locked, made sticky, moved and removed by moderators and admins - posts can be editted and removed by moderators and admins - users can post topics and replies - support for most common BBCode - search for posts - a memberlist - RSS feed All in just 50kb!
