PHProjekt is a flexible and simple to use tool for project management. However, the simple scripts version is multiple versions behind the current release.
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I've used PhProjekt for about 6 months now. The default layout is somewhat crunchy/cheesy, but the Fish something or another layout is pretty nice. What bothers me most is the online help. It's rather descriptive in some ways, but we've never been able to understand what constitutes a private uploaded file for a project vs. one that you want to share. There are too many options w/o explanation to upload, the chat never worked for us. The superadmin can't create projects or upload files, but I never caught that in the documentation- only in the support forum. Overall it's not very user-friendly and everyone on my team HATES IT. There needs to be clarity as to: 1.) How to create a project that a certain set of people can view- (clarify what a role is, what a group is, and why people can be in multiple groups, yet can't see multiple files) 2.) The Files area should be able to expand/collapse subfolders w/o refreshing the page (use DHTML perhaps) 3.) The dashboard/summary page should be customizable. 4.) Notes shouldn't be somewhat distant to the rest of the project. 5.) File upload should include a progress bar. With all being said, it is a nice start and at least functions. But it may be too complex for project managers to figure out; you have to be a technical genius just to figure out what each miniature icon does!

As a web developer I have very basic knowledge of PHP and MySql. The install and admin were very simple. I love it.

Author has build a modular set of functions that integrate basic workflow support for development projects. Extremely robust and easy to configure. Soem german work engineering included. Multilanguage support through language files. Well worth trying if you are looking for a way to enable you development staff.
